First African American Collegiate Athlete in Broncs and State History Passes AwayPublished by
EDINBURG The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is saddened to learn that former Broncs baseball player and cross country and track & field athlete D. Joe Williams, who in 1954 became the first African American to participate in college athletics in the State of Texas, passed away on Dec. 15 at the age of 77.
